The bulldog and the hummingbird

AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL POEMS ON IDENTITY

Moving structurally from London to Jamaica, the collection traces the writer’s search for belonging and grapples with cultural eclecticism.

Peppered with condensed micro-poems, the work includes Jessica’s Aesthetica award shortlisted piece ‘reclamation’ and celebrates the diaspora as a space where new identities are forged and creativity emerges.

Sofia the Dreamer and her Magical Afro

CHILDREN’S POEM-STORY

Many untold stories are held in the kinks of afro hair.

Winner of a Go Fund Me award and a National Poetry Day Recommended read, this fantasy-poem unravels the history of natural hairstyles and encourages children to love all of who they are.

“We dance because our first names

are at war with our last;

because we feel like flecks of dust

caught in a light stream

between two closed windows.”
